I read an article titled “How I Learned to Speak French in 17 Days” on Business Insider this morning and it totally blew my mind. Such dedication! It makes perfect sense though — when I spent a summer in France in high school my Parisian host family refused to speak English with me and in a few short weeks my speaking skills had improved by leaps and bounds (as had my Nutella eating skills…). One night, I remember actually dreaming in French! Of course reading the article now has me eager to brush up on my skills. What languages do you know? Do you have any tips for learning a new one? I’d love to hear.

Some great tips! I speak several languages but I learned French using the Michel Thomas CD’s and loved them! Duo lingo on my phone is a great way to brush up. And as my cousins will be here from France in two weeks, I should start now!

Stephanie – I need to find these CD’s! Was so excited to see your name in the comment box. Hope you’re well! xo

I learned French in high school, and I agree the best way to learn is to completely ditch English and only speak the language you’re trying to learn! I’m currently learning Italian with Rosetta Stone…and I’ve gotta say, it really is as good as they say it is! Arrivederci!

Diana – I have Rosetta Stone for French on my computer! I did the first lesson and loved it, but then I got sidetracked… Will try again!

Just saw the reply – I got them on Amazon. I think they have changed the program because when I looked up my version, they were no longer available other than people selling them for a ridiculous amount. But you live in NY now, I think? I would be happy to lend them to you. Just let me know.

i would definitely recommend the duolingo app! it’s free and and gives you brief lessons each day. I’ve started doing the five minute lessons for Spanish before I go to bed and they’re great!
