Hello, my dears. I’d alluded to some BIG NEWS recently and this is it! We bought our first home and are moving to Greensboro, North Carolina. I have dreamed of owning (and decorating!) my own place for ages and couldn’t be more thrilled. The new house has a very Southern feel with lots of quirky charm like a laundry chute, a wood-paneled library (complete with a gun cabinet…lordy lordy), and a proper sunroom begging to be filled with wicker furniture. While we love Seattle, my husband and I will both be working from home so we wanted more space and a city with more diversity for our black son. We have lots of friends in the North Carolina and it just feels right. I haven’t actually seen the home in person (you know I love an adventure!), but Simon did fly out to see it before we put in the offer.
Tomorrow we leave for a week-long road trip across country with two pugs and Gabe (he’s now 21 months and full of energy!). Needless to say, pray for us! Stay tuned for lots of photos of the new place and plenty of home renovation and decoration content (I’ve got six bathrooms to decorate—bring on the wallpaper!). I can’t wait to share this exciting chapter of our lives with all of you.
Love, Katie

So happy for you and your family. I’ve followed you for years and years, and it’s been amazing seeing you start your beautiful family. I’m sure you’re already on top of this, but once you get settled into that new house, be sure to register to vote in your new home state of North Carolina! It’s going to be an important state in the upcoming election! Love to you and yours

Ain’t it just like a friend of mine to hit me from behind? Yes, I’m going to Carolina in my mind.”

Welcome to the South!! I sincerely hope you find the people welcoming and caring. I have found, despite the bad press, most people are being kind and a bit more patient, which we could all use right now. Looking forward to seeing the new digs and definitely praying for your cross-country journey.

Hi Katie,
This is crazy! I just checked in on your site for a dose of Daily Hunt. I almost fell out of my chair when I read that you are moving to Greensboro, NC. My husband was born and raised here and I moved here with my family in 1988. We have called Raleigh and Richmond (VA) home before settling back to Greensboro with our two sons. We just bought a wonderful 100 year old quirky home down the street from where we currently live and I, too, am thrilled with the southern charm. I welcome a chat with you and am happy to answer and questions or provide help to you as you settle/renovate, etc.

Gabe has grown so much – he is almost a little boy now! And that killer smile – what a gift for you and your husband!
I hope you can stand the heat and humidity but NC is a great place to live (I lived in Central Virginia for 25 years). The growing season is long and spring starts in March some years, too. Plant those peonies where you know you will want them – they don’t like to be moved! And you must have a porch filled with wicker – I did and it became like another room for 6 months of the year.
A very wise move for your little guy – he will grow and thrive in Greensboro and meet all kinds of people over his lifetime…and he won’t have to leave for college as Duke is right there!
Good luck and here’s hoping for a good move!
Susan
