When St. Martin’s Press wanted to sponsor a post about Everybody Rise, the debut novel from New York Times reporter Stephanie Clifford, I was happy to oblige. The book has already generated significant buzz, with Clifford being dubbed a “21st-century Edith Wharton”; unsurprisingly, the movie rights have already been snatched up by the producer of The Devil Wears Prada. I finished the poignant and humorous tale in a single weekend and have a feeling you’ll eat it up, too.
Set in Manhattan in 2006, the story centers on Evelyn Beegan, a socially anxious 26-year-old desperately trying to infiltrate the ranks of high society. As we follow Evelyn’s trials and tribulations, Clifford gives us an inside look at the Upper East Side world of debutante balls, designer wardrobes, and antiquated traditions. The author is clearly familiar with the WASP scene, filling the book with spot-on descriptions of 1985 beige Mercedes (nothing too flashy), Jack Rogers sandals (a Jackie Kennedy favorite), and Cartier trinity rings. From the kayaks of Adirondack camps to the private pools of Southampton, we watch Evelyn’s swift but precarious rise with a mixture of horror, awe, and fascination.
The novel goes on sale August 18th, but can be pre-ordered on Amazon. I can’t wait to hear what you think! In celebration of the future bestseller, I thought I’d share some WASP style staples:
Tennis Earrings / Tortoise Sunglasses / Pearl Earrings / Lacoste Polo Shirt /Link Bracelet / L.L.Bean Leather Handle Tote / Chino Shorts / Gramercy Watch / Jack Rogers Sandals / / Polka Dot Laundry Bag / Needlepoint Keychain / Cashmere Sweater / Everybody Rise /

This book is definitely on my reading list ! I’m reading a great memoir of British upper crust entertaining, The Mad Boy, Lord Berners, My Grandmother and Me: An Aristocratic Family, a High-Society Scandal and an Extraordinary Legacy!
Thanks for sharing!
