Most my dear friends know that I’ve been keeping a list of future baby names since the tender age of, well, about ten. No, I’m not pregnant (nor do I plan to be anytime soon!), but I do hope to eventually have five or so bouncing babies of my own. I’m constantly scribbling down great names in my trusty moleskin notebook, be they from films, novels, artists, or crazy British aristocrats (the pages of Tatler are a treasure trove…). For girls I love fanciful, traditional-with-a-twist names, some frilly, other’s with a bit of a femme fatale edge. I also love boys names for girls—if the girl can pull them off they’re always just so hopelessly cool. Below, in no particular order, are some of my favorites.
- Harper
- Sofia
- Dakota
- Fiona
- Stella
- Clemence
- June
- Cecily
- Finn
- Savannah
- Jade
- Genevieve
- Lily
- Eloise
- Poppy
- Olivia
- Georgia
- Isabella
- Scarlett
- Dylan
- Winona
- Daisy
- Ruby
- Cameron
- Drew
What about you? Do you prefer the more traditional, popular names or will you opt for something more original? I can’t wait to hear your own personal favorites!

Well, I’m done having babies but since I never got to use my girl names (I have two boys), maybe one of my boys will! They are:
Sophia, Katharine, Isabella and Alexandra.
the NEO-traditionalist says
You all have such excellent taste! I’m so excited to add “Ida, Tess, Theodora, Violet, Alexandra…” Such fun!

Alexandra says
Those are really great names. Eloise especially!
I like old names- like Elisabeth and Anastasia. I think I got that from my mom; both me and my sister have pretty old (and relatively long) names. And I’m SO going to name my son (if I ever have one) Christopher Brandon. Yup, I’ll name my future son after a character in a Jane Austen novel.
the NEO-traditionalist says
Hi Alexandra! That’s so something I would do—name a child after a character in a Jane Austen novel. Kindred spirit!!

Haven’t we all done this? :) You have a few that are on my list. My friend’s daughter is named Blake, which I think is cute. My mom’s name is Lily (although she goes by her middle name), so that’s always been at the top of my list. I LOVE Lila, too. I always thought I’d use my brothers’ names as middle names… James and Pierce.

stop it. stop it. stop it. SO many of my fave names are on here!!! harper, finn and georgia, GENEVIEVE, are some of my all-time favorites!!!! love the margot suggestion too! i like beatrice also but it might be too far out there for this day and age in the US. this is kinda funny too…. i’ve always thought the name kate was very classic and simple…it’s my mom’s name (kathryn) so i’ll probably end up naming one of my daughter’s kate. you have a great name!

Out of the names you listed, I love Finn, Olivia and Isabella.
I also keep lists everywhere of baby names! These are the names I’ll pick from for my future children:
Norah, Lunetta, Imogen, Emma, Kenzie — for girls
Jack, Samson –for boys
My boys (if I have more than one..or any) will have the middle names of Edwin and Harris for their great-grandfathers.
Oh, and my future husband will just have to deal that I already have our kids names picked out :)
Stevi says
No way Dylan is one of my girl names I have had picked out for a while too!! I knew we had so much in common haha. I like non-traditional names but not too weird. Seeing as my name is Stevi and my sisters name is September, you can see we come from a family who likes the non traditional name choices. :)
I like the middle name Aurora for Dylan. :) I also like boyish names for girls, my mom was thinking about naming me Charlie which I think is cute too.
Jill says
All such beautiful, whimisical names. These are the type I lean towards as well. Lillian Elaine is one I am leaning towards.

Those are all adorable names for girls – definitely agree on the boy name for a girl (wink wink). My boyfriend’s niece’s name is Haven, super cute and original. Also love Nora and Tegan.
Jill says
I love some of yours, Kate! I adore my niece’s name, Ida. (Ida and Harry – just so cute.) Similarly, I like Ina a lot. The two names I’ve had picked out for daughters for the past ten years or so are Charlotte (Charlie!) and Elise. We’ll see what happens when that day actually comes, though!

I’m so in love with your blog, I just stumbled on it today and have spent the last hour obsessing over your posts!
Also, I think we might be soulmates. Not only do we share the same name, but we have 7 baby names in common too.
It’s so funny how alike girls are. I thought I was the only one who kept a constantly updated word document for baby names but my roommate does it too! Whenever we’re watching movies, one of us will ramdomly call out “oh, that’s one for the document!”
I’d also have to add Lucinda, Amelia, Laurel, Adeline, and Ellis for girls and Avery and Bennett for boys.
Michele says
Just found your blog and can’t stop reading!! #13 and #14 are my girls’ names!!! Lily is 9 and Eloise is 12, and I think they are perfect.
Chelsea says
Just saw this list! I was a nanny for a little girl named Ruby…her brother was Tripp. Sooo adorable. I loved them and their sweet retro names
Elizabeth Rose says
Well since I posted on the boy’s names now it’s the girls turn.
I’ve been in love with the name Felicity since the American Girl doll series. Then Lucy, Charlotte, Elizabeth, Lydia, Marian or Marianne (I can’t decide which), Lilah, Regan, Evelyn, Cassandra, Madelyn and Juliet.
