Yesterday we scooted over to Central Park for hot dogs and mini sailboats. So grateful for sunny days in NYC ☀️

I used to dread Mother’s Day. I wanted so badly

I used to dread Mother’s Day. I wanted so badly to have a little one of my own, but year after year it just didn’t seem in the cards. We spent our life savings transferring embryo after embryo. I finally got pregnant once and then miscarried on my birthday. We were living in Copenhagen and the winters were long and dark. I missed my mom back home in California. I learned the hard truth that sometimes no matter how hard you try and hope and pray and spend, life just isn’t fair. We turned to adoption. It required moving back to America and filling out mountains of paperwork. One evening in mid December we got the call that changed our lives. A young woman was on her way to the hospital to deliver a baby boy and wanted us to be his parents. Simon packed a comical amount of tea bags (he can’t help it, he’s British) and we jumped on a plane. The first time I held Gabe in the hospital I didn’t cry—I was too scared to let myself believe my dream was finally coming true. Today that sweet baby boy is six-and-a-half and took the tram to Trader Joe’s with his father to buy me hydrangeas and crumpets. I am a mother and it is exhausting and beautiful and at times maddening and the world’s greatest gift. Not a day goes by I don’t feel grateful for Gabe’s birth mother and the selfless decision she made. If you are struggling to start your family, keep your chin up. Stay the course. Have some good cries, sit out the never ending baby showers if you need to, don’t be afraid to put yourself first. Your day will come and the roller coaster will have been worth it. Sending love to everyone who has complicated feelings around this day. You and Gabe’s birth mama are forever high among my heroes.
