I’m a big fan of having a fashion uniform—you know, the foolproof classics you turn to time and again. Well, it would appear J.Crew is, too. Their new “Always List” spotlights the staples in any stylish woman’s wardrobe—stripes, the button-up, denim, and so forth. I love the understatedly chic mood of the campaign, from the model’s bold orangey-red lip (Jenna Lyons is known to favor NARS Heat Wave and Red Square) to her unfussy low pony with its simple center part.
I’m seriously downsizing my wardrobe for our our move to Denmark and will be keeping this concept of timelessness in mind as I pack. On my always list…? Black high-rise jeans, crewneck cashmere sweaters, a big cashmere wrap scarf, and my favorite ankle booties. What staples am I missing….? Would love to hear what’s on your list!

I have always had a uniform, more for maximizing my chances for looking good rather than for ease. My uniform is usually in the black, white, grey, navy, beige and denim. I am big on scarves with multicolors like Etro and stripes. I value quality over quantity. One “perfect” leather jacket, trench, overcoat etc. I know what I can’t wear and I don’t try to make it work just because I see it on someone who does. When I see a photo myself not wearing my “uniform” I know why I started wearing one in the first place.

Karen – I love this! I dress very similarly. Over the years I’ve learned what flatters my shape (and what doesn’t!) and I try to stick with a neutral palette that’s flattering and effortless. Good call on the multicolor scarves…will have to give them a try! xx

I was about to say that a beautiful trench coat belongs on this list, too, as well as a pair of perfect black flats (my husband gave me my dream flats for Christmas—Chloé’s scalloped “Lauren” flats) and a classic pair or two of sunnies (aviator, tortoise, and black). Katie, I am DYING with jealousy over your move to Denmark. I can hardly deal with it.
